Japan tsunami calculation
Couple of months ago, as a part of project on assessment of far-field tsunami impact on Kuril-Kamchatka coast we made a series of numerical computation for a set of Mw9.0 model sources distributed along the major Pacific seismic zones.
It turned out that one of model sources near Japan (No.85) was placed pretty close (within less then half degree) to the epicenter of the recent Mw9.1 Honshu earthquake and its source parameters are very similar to the fault plane 1 in the Harvard CMT solution. Preliminary modeling was made on 5-min bathymetry grid and, of cource, cannot precisely reproduce the near-field amplitudes. However, the general pattern of energy distribution may be of interest for those who are curently interpreting the real observational data that are coming through TBB.
Enclosed please find the energy pattern for Mw9.0 model source No.85 located in ca. 100 km east of Miyako Prefecture (at 37.9N, 142.2E).
Lower figure shows the histogram of calculated maximun wave heights (red color –positive wave, blue color – negative wave) at the selected coastal point along Sakhalin, Kuriles, Kamchatka and Koryakia.
